Obama grants – introduced to encourage moms to earn a degree

Obama Grants – Introduced To Encourage Moms To Earn A Degree

No doubt higher education is important, but there are often a number of obstacles that can hinder potential students from enrolling in college. Family obligations and financial concerns are often at the top of this list, especially for single mothers. Obama grants meant to encourage mothers to return to college to earn a degree attempt to ease some of the concerns associated with going to college. The purpose of federal grants can be seen in many cases to help disadvantaged groups to attend college. A commonly given endowment for low-income students is the federal Pell grant. The benefits of Pell grants have been improved in order to be a greater help to potential students, since the Obama administration has stated that it places a high priority on education. A title given to a portion of the standard Pell grant program is the Scholarships for Moms program. Working moms are especially encouraged to apply for this. By equipping low-income mothers to earn a degree, the administration believes that this will provide a stimulus to the lagging economy, and be a great benefit to the families of those mothers, by increasing their earning power in the work force. $5,000 from a Pell grant may not seem like a lot of money, when you look at the high cost of education these days, but it could help defray the other expenses associated with going to college. A student has to pay for books and supplies, housing and travel expenses as well. For a single mom, these miscellaneous expenses may also include childcare. Another great characteristic of the Pell grant award is that the money awarded does not necessarily have to be applied to college tuition. Any expense that can be seen to be necessary to obtaining an education, can be covered by the grant money. Finally, consider that this program doesn??t cater specifically to traditional students; it provides opportunity for traditional and non-traditional students alike. If a mother wants to return to college to earn a degree, she will be just as welcome as a student who is fresh out of high school. Consideration is given equally to mothers who would like to stay home and take care of their children while doing online courses, to potential students who would prefer to go to a small community college. The most important thing is that all willing students are able to earn a degree that will provide them with significant opportunity in the job market. Obama grants are an effort by the current administration to show that education truly is the key to a bright future. Everyone from young adults to working mothers has a chance to go to college, with the allocation of a significant amount of money to pay for education.

Automated fishway to help keep native bass species alive – PACE Today

The native bass species will be able to migrate and breed in the Parramatta River for the first time in 200 years following the installation of three of a proposed four fishladders at the Marsden Weir fishway, writes Sarah Falson.

The Parramatta Weir Project was opened officially by the Parramatta Lord Mayor, Paul Garrard, of the Parramatta Council in November but begins operation this month. The system is designed to raise numbers of the native freshwater fish, which have been reduced due to regulation of rivers across New South Wales.

The weir works by using three hydraulically-operated gates that draw fish into a ?€?fishlock?€™ by manipulating water velocities within the structure.

Once fish are trapped in the fishlock, the water within the area is adjusted so that it is equal to the headwater level. Fish are then free to leave the fishlock and continue their upstream migration.

Scholarships awarding high returns through obama grants

Scholarships awarding high returns through Obama grants

For many the idea of returning to college as working mothers seems almost a dream. However it need not be with the assistance of the government beneath the Obama administration. However do you know what the Obama grant is all about? Many would like to think that such federal programs which aid mothers in being able to attend college is a fresh and innovative idea, in reality it is simply a reworking of existing government benefits. For moms who wish to return to College the Pell grants creates a huge plus point and is certainly causing many to take note. One of long term and common forms of financial aid which can be obtained through the government particularly for college is known as the Federal Pell grant. For many seeking aid as a student normally requires one to take a loan out with the daunting task of repayment at the end, the Pell grant however does not require this. You may wonder who can be awarded the Pell grant? In general such aid is normally given to students who do not already have a professional degree or bachelors but seek an undergraduate degree. As a single working mother such advantages is creating a huge stir when it comes to the exciting Scholarship for Moms program. Mothers are being encouraged to make use of the funds provided through the Pell grants to attend college by President Obama and the Obama administration although no specific grant is named specifically. If you’re concerned that you won’t be able to support yourself on the Pell grant a monetary gift you will be pleased to know that it does not restrict you in seeking other sources of financial aid. Aid can be obtained to cover further educational cost through federal programs and private, non-federal organizations alike. The award year will take place from the 1st of July 2009 to the 30th June 2010 with the maximum amount to be given through the Pell grant of $5,350.00. Although the federal Pell grant is unlikely to cover your full college tuition costs you can supplement it by applying through other sources. With so many benefits it’s of no surprise that the federal Pell grant does not limit you once you are awarded funds to the payment of tuition. Educational costs may also include housing, books, laptops and housing as acceptable expenses. With much attention being paid by the Obama administration to the importance of further education the scholarships for moms’ has become ever more popular also highlighting the many advantages of the Pell grant program. There are many advantages to such a federal program and is greatly beneficial to single, working mothers who wish to earn a degree. College no longer has to be just a dream because of family or financial needs. The Obama grant obtained through the Pell grant program has created an opportunity for many to take advantage of further college education. This is exactly true for all those working mothers. There is certainly great encouragement for all single mothers with a full-time job by the current administration to obtain a degree by going to college. The current administration is heartily cheering for single, full-time working mothers to apply for college and earn a degree. So much could change your future for the better.

Conners state college – equine technology degree

Conners State College – Equine Technology Degree

Conners State College is located in Warner, Oklahoma and is a two-year public college that offers a wide variety of different associate’s degrees. One of the associate’s degrees that is available for students to pursue is the Equine Technology degree.

The Equine Technology Program is made up of different theory classes that range from anatomy, physiology, and nutrition to marketing and management. Students will also be able to participate in daily hands of activities concentrating on breaking and starting young horses. This will then lead up to a specialization in the student’s specific area of choice. Students can also choose to pursue either an Associate’s of Science degree, or an Associate’s of Applied Science degree. Both of these degree options are available in this two year program. Graduates of the program with either degree have the opportunity to be employed as assistant trainers, breeders, equine managers, or they can continue their education by transferring to a major university.

The equine program at Conners State College is designed to teach students responsibility, horsemanship, and many other skills that are required to be successful in the equine industry. Students will also have the opportunity to speak with the owners of horses while they are in the program.

The first semester of the student’s freshman year will be spent working on their western equitation skills. They will then proceed on to starting and breaking colts. The colt breaking period is made up of three different sessions. Each student will be given a new colt at the start of each new session, meaning that all students will have the chance to start three different horses. During this time, students are asked to advance their abilities as they begin to gain more and more experience.

During the first semester of the sophomore year, students will begin by taking four weeks of English equitation. Following this four week period, students will then have twelve weeks of specialized training in their field of choice. Some of the specialized training areas include roping, cutting, or reining. During the second semester of the sophomore year, students will have to start another colt before beginning their externship. The externship is a great chance for the students to work with a breeder or trainer that also has the same interest as the student. The externship lasts for eight weeks and during this time the students will be working and riding alongside the breeder or trainer so that they will have to chance to learn and benefit by having hands on experience in their day to day operations.

The Equine facilities are some of the best in the nation. Students will be able to take advantage of the wonderful features that include:

Three barns with a total of 50 stalls
Tack Room
Feed Room
Vet Room
100 x 250 foot indoor arena
150 x 300 foot outdoor arena
40, 60, and 100 foot round pens

Students will be at an advantage over students at different colleges because Conners State College has some of the best instructors in the country. Fred Williams has been teaching at Conners State College since 1979 and has an Applied Science Degree from OSU Tech. He also has a teaching certificate from Colorado State University. The instructors also have a great deal of experience when it comes to competing at horse shows. An mba earned through online education is equally viable as one from a land-based institute

An MBA Earned through Online Education is Equally Viable as one from a Land-Based Institute

The modern generation has enjoyed the results of revolution in many fields; education is one of them. The world of education has immensely developed since its inception. With the advent of internet, studying from your home comfort is possible through online and one can be buoyed up at the thought of not having to travel to his or her learning institute for attending classes.
The most intriguing qualification to the modern generation of students as well as employers is by far the MBA or Master of Business Administration; thanks to globalization. The reason why fresh graduates are running after it is that it’s a master’s degree in business that boosts one’s creditability in the job market. MBA shapes up one’s personality, thinking prowess, communication skills and interpersonal skills. In short, it offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience to students to change their lives forever.
A preconceived notion lingers around your mind that such an all-embracing learning experience is best delivered through face-to-face interaction and thus, a land-based college is the best place to study at. But a fact has to interfere and dispel this notion. It’s true that the university or institute where the student wants to attend classes from matters a lot. But then again, nothing in this world is perfect. Problems can take place in a land based institute too where student learn from face-to-face interactions with their teachers. Plus, land-based colleges can’t do much about their class timings to deliver education to working professionals; suiting their convenience. Also, physically challenged people cannot commute to a land-based university; no matter how much interested they are to study– another factor that land-based universities can’t do much to help.
Online education has aided to all these constraints by tailoring their courses and their methods to deliver education. With an online course, a student can find utmost comfort. They can choose from certificate, diploma, bachelors’ and master’s degrees and even doctoral programs as well. Specialized courses like hospitality, tourism, health services, telecom, agriculture and of course management is also taught in online form with as good learning resources, personality development tips, mentor guidance and a comprehensive teacher-student interaction – things that working professionals can cash in on.

Making the move to e-learning

Making The Move To E-Learning

eLearning did not spell the end of the traditional Instructor-led or classroom-based training as many might have thought a few years ago. In fact each mode has its place in training today and often the best result is obtained by using a mix. Generally, there are three aspects that should be considered in deciding when to choose online self-paced training over the traditional classroom style. Firstly, the personality type of the learners or the culture of the organisation, secondly, the type of material being trained, and finally, the business case.

Lets first look at cultural aspects:

Where is the motivation?

We all know and understand classroom training, as that was the basis of our school education. We grew up with it and therefore we feel comfortable with it. The advantages were that, for the most part, those who started the class were there at the end. As you need to be in the classroom at a particular time, with someone checking that you are there, classroom training has an inbuilt motivator. Self-paced online learning is, as the name suggests, driven by the learner, which means that there is a large degree of self-motivation required. From an organisational perspective, a motivator needs to be in place. This can be as simple as requiring the training to be completed by a specified event.

Who’s got the time?

With today’s higher pressure work environment, we all find it difficult to leave the office for a day or two to attend a training course. We have priorities that need to be taken care of. With instructor-led classes, you have to enrol in a class that fits into your schedule and you also need to add in travel time. As the preparation time is so large, we tend to extend the duration of the class so that we do more in a single sitting. Two problems arise here. Firstly, we are away from the office for significant amounts of time and secondly we expect learners to take in vast amounts of knowledge in a single sitting.

Online learning allows learners to utilise their time more effectively. This is accomplished through better targeting of the content:

* The learner does not have to complete each of the topics in the course sequentially. If a topic is not important to the learner, they can simply skip over it
* Everyone learns at a different pace. If you pick up a topic quickly, there is no need to wait for other people in the classroom to catch-up (and vice versa)
* By completing a pre-assessment, you can identify those topics that you need to focus on, and ignore the topics you passed in the pre-assessment.
* The content is available 7 days a week, 24-hours a day, so it is easier to fit into any schedule.

From a course content perspective:

Mine’s better than yours

You might remember from school that there was always a teacher that the students preferred. Why? Because they taught the same material in such a way that the class was more engaged in the content. On average those students concentrated more and ultimately achieved higher marks. This was great for those students, but what about the students in other classes? The Quality of Instructor-led training is directly related to the quality of the instructor on that particular day. Online learning provides you with a consistent experience for all learners, so this scenario does not occur.

Theory vs Practise

Self-paced training has proven more effective for imparting facts and theories. Learners can concentrate on one thing at a time and pick this up at their own pace rather than be distracted by what is going on in the classroom. In an ideal situation for training compliance, IT applications, induction or product knowledge you would want to use self-paced environment. When it comes to applying the knowledge in a variety of differing circumstances, a collaborative approach would be more useful. Technology has improved online learning’s effectiveness in this area through the use of simulations, web conferencing and web2.0 technologies such as Discussion Forums, blogs and wikis.

An Ongoing Reference

Online learning provides ‘just-in-the-nick-of-time’ training. This means that the content can be referenced at the moment of need, such as if you are currently doing some analysis – “How do I do that pivot table again”, or if you are about to do a recruitment interview “I had better freshen up on interviewing techniques”.

A Business Case Point of View

The many expenses involved with instructor facilitated learning generally make it more expensive. Let’s face it, once you add up the major costs involved – including travel, instructors and classrooms – there is a significant outlay that needs to be apportioned and offset by those in the classroom. Where there is a distributed workforce these costs become unaffordable for most.

This is where a blended approach can be used with much greater impact. Teach the theory in self-paced online learning environment, and then use discussion groups to translate the theory into practice. You therefore use the most expensive portion where it is the most useful.

The next step is to persuade senior staff members to implement and accept an e-learning program. This will require an unmistakably distinct business case. Building a list of prospective benefits is just the start. You then have to apply it to your specific business circumstances. A business case will provide a clear declaration of the business dilemma(s) and your projected resolution(s), and offer measurements of accomplishment. Essentially, it illustrates your company’s present status in opposition to the desired status, and gives your company an efficient and cost-effective way to reach its goals.

Michigan schools improve high school graduation requirements

Michigan Schools Improve High School Graduation Requirements

Michigan Schools presented its new high school graduation requirements — the Michigan Merit Curriculum — in December 2005. The Michigan schools are determined to better prepare students for work and college success, by assuring that all students have the knowledge and skills needed to succeed.

Previous requirements for graduation in the Michigan schools reflected an economy and society that no longer exist, nor did they represent the real world demands of work and college. Michigan schools skills and course subjects that were once optional for students after graduation now are essential to enter college or the workforce. In a 2005 survey, only 24 percent of the graduates said they were significantly challenged during high school, while a recent survey showed one-in-five graduates thought expectations were low and it was easy to “slide by”. National data indicate that academic achievement in high school reading, mathematics and science has been mostly stagnate for decades.

Michigan’s Governor Jennifer M. Granholm backs the new Michigan schools program, stating that the state’s economy will suffer if Michigan does not have a highly educated workforce. Her goal is to double the number of college graduates in Michigan, and the new Michigan schools high school graduation requirements will ensure the goal is met.

The new Michigan Merit Curriculum requires Michigan schools graduates to successfully complete both the Michigan Merit Core and the 21st Century Learning Core. The new Michigan Merit Core consists of the following coursework:

• English Language Arts, integrated Humanities sequence, or CTE sequence — 4 credits
• Mathematics — 4 credits with one credit each in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, AND an additional mathematics or mathematics-related credit in the senior year, integrated mathematics sequence, or CTE sequence
• Science — 3 credits with one credit each in Biology, Physics or Chemistry, and one additional credit of science, integrated math sequence, or CTE sequence
• Social Sciences — 3 credits
• Civics and Economics — 5 credits
• U.S. History and World History — 1 credit each, integrated with Geography, integrated Humanities sequence, or CTE sequence
• World Languages — 2 credits
• Health and Physical Education — 2 credits
• Visual and Performing Arts — 1 credit

Additionally, students in their junior year must take the Michigan schools’ Michigan Merit Exam or the alternate MI-ACCESS assessment exam. Those who do not pass in their junior year have another opportunity to take the exam in the spring of their senior year. Additionally, the Michigan schools are developing high school content expectations to serve as a guide to curriculum development for the school districts.

The Michigan schools new graduation requirements instill rigor into the high school coursework, but provides some flexibility for school district phase-in of the new requirements and student modification provisions in some limited situations. The new Michigan schools requirements begin with the freshman class in the fall of 2006.
