CLEP Tests Provide Flexibility to College Students Managing Multiple Responsibilities

Many college students have multiple responsibilities in addition to college-level course work, such as family, work, or community or religious involvements. With all of these responsibilities, college students can often feel overwhelmed, not wanting to neglect any of these responsibilities. In order to be successful in college courses, students must prioritize and manage time well in all areas of life. CLEP (College Level Examination Program) provides a way for college students to lighten their course load, skip tedious general education course requirements, save money, and graduate sooner. For example a nursing student who obtains a passing score on the Introductory Psychology CLEP test will likely be able to reduce her course load during one semester by not having to take the three hour Introductory Psychology course. A Psychology major may find that he is nearing graduation but lacking a general science course and is able to take the Natural Sciences CLEP test in order to graduate on time. Other students may wish to move on to more exciting upper level courses specific to their degree and use CLEP tests to obtain lower level general education course requirements.

CLEP exams are 90 minute computerized exams that test students’ knowledge of material generally covered in the first two years of college (lower level courses). College Board, the parent company of CLEP, currently offers CLEP tests in 34 different subjects, such as history, foreign language, science, and social science. With over 2,900 colleges and universities grant credits based on passing CLEP test scores, many students are able to take advantage of CLEP. In addition, considering that CLEP exams are administered at over 1,400 CLEP test centers across the United States and abroad, students are likely to find a CLEP test center within driving distance of their home. There are even CLEP test centers located on certain military bases in the United States and overseas. With each CLEP exam costing only $70 to take, plus a small administration fee charged by the CLEP testing center, students can save a tremendous amount of money over taking the actual college class.

Some students will find that they already have the knowledge required to take a CLEP test. For example, the student majoring in marketing may find that he is able to take the Principles of Marketing CLEP test and apply knowledge he learned during a marketing internship completed in the summer following his freshman year of college. The student from France who came to the U.S. for college may be able to pass the French CLEP test using foreign language skills she already possesses.

While some students find that they already possess the knowledge required to pass a CLEP test, other students may need to study in order to learn the material necessary to take the CLEP. Students can utilize a variety of methods to prepare for CLEP exams, such as college textbooks, CLEP study guides, cd’s and dvd’s, and online CLEP prep systems. SpeedyPrep is an online CLEP test study system designed to quickly and affordably prepare students for a variety of CLEP exams. This 100% online learning system features questions designed to help students learn the material they need to know in order to successfully take a CLEP test. Using www.SpeedyPrep.com, students can prepare for their CLEP test in as little time as a few days or weeks.

Students considering taking CLEP tests should first talk to their academic advisor to find out the specific college or university’s CLEP test policies. Each college or university accepting CLEP test credits has different courses they allow each CLEP test to count toward. Each student has different learning needs and a different learning style and should choose a CLEP test preparation method that is best for him or her. CLEP exams provide much-needed flexibility to college students who are managing multiple tasks and responsibilities in addition to the daily demands of college course work.
