Studentscholarships – Studies in the Field of Dentistry is my Choice

Life has shown me that a road less traveled does indeed make “ all the difference.” My own journey toward attending a four year university has been a difficult one. However, as a New York University student, I am grateful for the gradual and lasting change my life’s path has brought. It has strengthened my character as well as my belief in a quality education.

Like so many others preparing for college graduation, I am thoroughly confused and frightened by the choices that will confront me after the hats are tossed. However, as I am making all the necessary considerations – which student loan consolidation program, what type of job to accept – a choice arose. I can take out enormous loans, and like my friend, enroll in the Doctor of Dental Surgery program. Or, I can take on the load of full-time work and a Master’s programs in order to help my mother, who being single, simply needs help managing the mortgage. My mother’s encouraging me to get the loans and to aggressively pursue my education. Still, I may make the latter choice, thinking that my happiness and successful future can wait a few more years.

And so, I’ll work – nearly forty hours a week and find a master program to enroll in. However, I fear my mother is right, my time is not boundless and I may later regret the few, but crucial, years I’ve lost. While, I am currently approaching twenty six years and realize as an undergrad that I will be graduating four years later than the norm, I am a better person for my decision. Because of my decision to work and help my mother before college, I have a four year head start in the real world; and now my mother owns a home. Most importantly, my experience at work and at the New York University College of Dentistry has cemented my desire for education excellence.

Through my endeavors as a hygiene student, I have become aware of Oral Health Disparities in minority populations and realize that there is a shortage of minority dentist and dental hygienist. Therefore, I have become increasingly interested in expanding my studies in the field of dentistry, but the choice of home obligation vs. success and happiness is a difficult one.
